Ahead of unit testing i.e. with a framework, some kind of standard set 
of media that we know will load and can be transcoded would be a good start.

What is the problem? I can compile from svn using cmake 2.6 okay on 
win32, admittedly with python turned off.

Sounds like a quite reasonable approach to me.

Also agree; I started placing notes in INSTALL, and I would suggest this 
is a good place to have simple instructions.
